Registration for GVMS

To use the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) for UK border processes, businesses and hauliers must complete registration through HMRC. GVMS is essential for goods moving through ports that operate a pre-lodgement model, allowing customs declarations to be linked to vehicle movements for faster clearance.

The Process:

Step 1 - Prepare Your Details

Before registering, ensure you have a valid EORI number and a Government Gateway account. These are mandatory for accessing GVMS and submitting customs declarations.

Step 2 - Register via HMRC Portal

Log in to your Government Gateway account and enroll for GVMS services. This step enables you to create Goods Movement References (GMRs), which consolidate multiple customs declarations into one reference for each vehicle.

Step 3 - Register via HMRC Portal

Registration alone isn’t enough—businesses must use CDS-compatible customs software to submit accurate declarations through the Customs Declaration Service (CDS). Integration between GVMS and customs management software ensures real-time data exchange, automated processes, and compliance with HMRC regulations.

Why it Matters

Proper GVMS registration combined with customs declaration software reduces delays, avoids costly storage charges, and keeps goods moving efficiently across UK borders.
