End-to-End GVMS

The Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) is a UK government system designed to simplify customs processes for goods moving through ports that use the pre-lodgement model. GVMS enables faster border crossings by linking customs declarations to vehicle movements, reducing delays and improving compliance.

The GVMS Process

Step 1 - Register for GVMS

Businesses and hauliers must register through the HMRC portal using their Government Gateway account. An EORI number is required for access.

Step 2 - Pre-Lodge Customs Declarations

Before goods arrive at the port, customs declarations must be submitted via the Customs Declaration Service (CDS). Using CDS-compatible customs software ensures accurate, automated submissions and compliance with HMRC regulations.

Step 3 - Create a Goods Movement Reference (GMR)

Once declarations are lodged, generate a GMR in GVMS. This single reference links multiple declarations to a vehicle, streamlining border checks.

Step 4 - Integration with Customs Software

Connecting GVMS with customs management software provides real-time visibility, reduces manual errors, and speeds up clearance. This integration is essential for freight forwarders, hauliers, and traders managing high-volume shipments.

By following this end-to-end process and leveraging customs declaration software, businesses can avoid costly delays, maintain compliance, and ensure goods move efficiently across UK borders.
